ABOUT THE SPEAKER

Armen Sarkissian was President of the Republic of Armenia from 2018 to 2022.
From 1996 to 1997 he served as Prime Minister of the Republic of Armenia.
In 1992 he was appointed as Ambassador of Armenia to the UK and served as Senior Ambassador to Europe, Ambassador to the EU, Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, Vatican, and the Head of Mission to NATO. 2000 - 2013 A. Sarkissian served as: Special Advisor of the President of the EBRD, Chairman of the Global Council on Energy Security-WEF, Chairman and Founder of the EURASIA Centre at Cambridge University, Board member- Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University and others. He also worked as a Senior Advisor to the Chainmen, CEOs of - BP, Alcatel Lucent, Telefonica, Bank of America, Merrill Lynch and other multinational corporations.

Dr. Armen Sarkissian is a well-known philanthropist and influential leader, with vast business and civic networks in major capitals around the world and leadership positions in international organizations, such as the East West Institute, Euro‐ Atlantic Security Initiative, Global Leadership Foundation, the World Economic Forum and others. Dr. Sarkissian has over 25 years of experience in science and technology, global diplomacy, and international business. He is co-creator of the Tetris Gold-Wordtris video-game (world N1 in early 1990’s.). Author of “Art of Diplomacy - Quantum Politics” and a bestselling book - “Small States Club” 2023. He is actively promoting necessity of – S20 organization.

Dr. A. Sarkissian, together with his son Vartan Sarkissian, has recently founded ATOM (Advanced Tomorrow), a non-profit organization dedicated to advancing health, well-being, and longevity. The inaugural conference, held in Singapore in 2023, was a great success. Their most recent conference Revolutionizing Healthcare and Longevity, was held in London and was equally successful. It brought together influential figures from diverse sectors, including politics, business, academia and arts, to explore transformative ideas in healthcare and longevity.


ABOUT THE MODERATOR

Kal Raustiala holds the Promise Institute Chair in Comparative and International Law at UCLA Law School and is a Professor at the UCLA International Institute, where he teaches in the Program on Global Studies. Since 2007 he has served as Director of the UCLA Burkle Center for International Relations. From 2012-2015 he was UCLA’s Associate Vice Provost for International Studies and Faculty Director of the International Education Office. Professor Raustiala's research focuses on international law, international relations, and intellectual property.

 

PARKING AND DIRECTIONS

Parking is available at UCLA's Parking Structure #2, which is at 719 Hilgard Avenue, LA 90024 (Pay-by-space visitor parking is marked by a green circle and the letter "P" and is on the lower levels (do not go up the ramp to levels 3-7). Costs range from $4 for 1 hour to $16 for all day. Please park in the respective parking locations, or your car may be ticketed. 

Guests have two options for purchasing parking. 

Using a pay station on the day of

Follow the signs in the parking lot to park your car in a pay-by-space location. Once parked, go to the nearest parking pay station (you find them next to pedestrian garage exits). Enter your license plate number in the machine. Pay by exact cash or credit card. Bring cash and a credit card, just in case. Pay stations only accept $1, $5, and $10 bills and DO NOT give change in the form of cash or credit. Parking is $4 per hour and $16 per day. Parking must be purchased the day of. 

Purchasing tickets online

Only full-day parking passes can be purchased online. Day passes are $16, but can be purchased in advance here under 'Guest Login.' If you do not have an ID and password, you may create an account here

Once you create your account, you will want to purchase a yellow parking pass for parking structure 2. You will then follow the signs in the parking lot to park your car in a yellow permit parking location (all those not marked as Blue Permit or X Permit spaces!)

  • Arrive early, registration check-in begins at 4:15 PM and doors open at 4:30 PM.

  • Food and drink is not permitted in Schoenberg Hall.

In sponsoring the Bernard Brodie Distinguished Lecture on the Conditions of Peace, the Burkle Center for International Relations celebrates the memory of Brodie as an eminent scholar and teacher. The lectures provide a special forum for outstanding students of politics, strategy, and warfare to present their thoughts and research within the scholarly and humanist tradition exemplified by Bernard Brodie.

Established in 1980, the lecture series provides a special forum for dignitaries and scholars of politics, strategy, warfare, and peace to present their views to the UCLA community and the public.
